Hartenfels Palace

Hartenfels Palace was built in the 15th and 16th centuries in the style of the early German Renaissance. The Grosser Wendelstein, its semi-open spiral staircase, is a prominent feature. Lavish festivals and numerous weddings were celebrated in the most modern residential palace of its day in Saxony.

On display in the chapel cellar and the lapidarium of the Lower Court Hall are original architectural sculptures from the 16th century.

On the observation platform of the Hausmann Tower, you can look out over the palace, the town and far beyond the Elbe riverside meadows. The palace chapel in the wing closest to the Elbe was the first ever Protestant church.

It was consecrated by Martin Luther on 5 October 1544.
